Harnessing the power of nature

Wetlands are a revolutionary yet natural solution to water recycling. Once treated, the water makes its way to the wetland, where the plants and species remove pollutants and filter water. ​

This process improves river water quality so wildlife and habitats can create havens for thousands of species of bugs, birds, and biodiversity – in fact 40% of the worlds plants and animals depend on wetlands, so it’s important we keep investing in greener solutions to not only keep taps flowing and drains flowing but wildlife thriving too.

Natural flood defences

Climate change, a fast-growing population and building on green spaces is putting additional pressure on the sewer network to store excess water during heavy rainfall. But wetlands can store lots of water from rain and overflows from riverbanks, which slows the speed that water re-enters the rivers – helping to reduce the chance of flooding downstream.
